What do they like to do/enjoy?
*sitting around the campfire with some beers while people sing & tell "no shit there I was" stories?
*Sewing?
*fighting?
*cooking?
*relaxing?

The larger multi-day events (think Geddon/Rag/Chaos...ect..) will have classes that give combatants and non-com's alike the chance to interact with others in the sport they might not otherwise interact with.
Perhaps they could participate in the bardic competition, or the mixed drink challenge, perhaps they could help with feast prep, or run a vendor booth in merchant row.

Are they worried about garb? get them garb, make it, buy it, find it, borrow it.
Weapons or fighting skill? teach them how to make weapons (or where to buy them) & fight with them, or find someone they can spar with.
Need a tent? ask around many people have extras, or have large tents with extra crash space

Focus on the points that would interest them and sell those points.
Mostly encourage them. Try to attend events near where they live, or at least 1/2 way to where they live. TELL them where you'll be and that you'd love to see them out there.
